7th Earl of Lonsdale (1922-2006)

The Earl of Lonsdale, 7th holder of the peerage, landowner, of Askham Hall, Penrith, Cumbria, died 23 May, 2006. He was 83.James Hugh William Lowther was born 3 Nov, 1922, the elder son of Anthony Edward Lowther, styled Viscount Lowther (who died in 1949); and was educated at Eton. Succeeded to the earldom (cr. 1807), & the Viscountcy and Barony of Lowther, on the demise of his grandfather, 1953. Career:->served in WW2 as a Captain in the RAC, & as a Captain in the East Riding Yeomanry & was mentioned in despatches. He was four times married, firstly, in 1945 (div. 1954), to Tuppina Cecily (d. 1984), daughter of Capt Geoffrey Henry Bennet; married 2ndly, 1954 (div. 1962), the Hon Jennifer Lowther, daughter of Maj the Hon Christopher William Lowther, of the viscounts Ullswater; married 3rdly, 1963, Mrs Nancy Ruth Stephenson, daughter of Thomas Cobbs, of Pacific Palisades, California, United States; married 4thly, 1975, Caroline Sheila, yst daughter of Sir Gerald Gordon Ley, TD, 3rd Baronet; and has issue from his four marriages.The peerages and baronetcy (cr. 1764) now devolve upon his lordship's eldest son, Hugh Clayton Lowther, styled Viscount Lowther, who was b. 27 May, 1949. A Thanksgiving service takes place at St. Michael's, Lowther, Cumbria, 3 June 2006.
