Major Bruce Middleton Hope Shand, MC (1917-2006)

Major Bruce Shand, MC, father of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, died at his home in Dorset, 11 June, 2006. He was aged 89. Maj. Shand was Vice Lord-Lieutenant for the County of East Sussex, 1974-92.Bruce Middleton Hope Shand was born 22 January, 1917, the son of Philip Morton Shand (1888-1960), by his wife the former Edith Marguerite Harrington (1893-1981); and was educated at Rugby and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.Career: --> commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th Royal Lancers, 1937, Major 1942; MC and Bar, 1942; wounded and prisoner of war, 1942; retuired from the Army in 1947; Exon, Queen's Body Guard nof the Yeomen of the Guard, 1971, Ensign 1978-85, Adutant and Clerk of the Cheque, 1985-87; Joint or acting Master, Southdown Fox Hounds, 1956-75; Deputy Lieutenant for Sussex, 1962, &c.Publications: "Previous Engagements" (1991).Maj. Shand married 2 January, 1946, the Hon. Rosalind Maud Cubitt (b. 11 Aug 1921; d. 14 July 1994), daughter of the 3rd Baron Ashcombe (1899-1962), by his wife the former Sonia Rosemary Keppel (1900-86), scion of the Earls of Albemarle, by whom he had issue, a son, Mark Roland, b. 28 June, 1951, and 2 daughters, Camilla Rosemary, b. 17 July 1947, and Sonia Annabel, b. 2 Feb, 1949
